The game begins with a short cutscene. Princess Toadstool sits peacefully on a hill outside Mario's Pad. Suddenly, she is kidnapped by King Bowser using the Koopa Clown Car. Mario exits his house then and sees Princess Toadstool in peril. He chases Toadstool and Bowser and ends up at Bowser's Keep. After going through the castle, Mario finally catches up with Bowser and proceeds to battle him on the chandeliers. Upon defeating Bowser and rescuing the princess, the castle begins to shake. A giant sword named Exor falls from the sky and crashes into Bowser's Keep, destroying the Star Road on the way. The crash sends Mario, Toadstool, and Bowser flying in separate directions.

After Mario and his party retrieve the Star Piece at Marrymore, the player can return to Mushroom Kingdom, find the inn, and talk to a young Toad in the corner. After talking to him several times, he sells Mario a minigame, Beetle Mania, for 500 coins. In the minigame, the player must shoot red Koopa shells and avoid the red stars they make when they are destroyed. These red stars also destroyed other shells, allowing the player to make chain reactions and gain more points.
Unlike the Paper Mario series, there are no definable "chapters", and therefore there are no definable "chapter bosses"; any significant enemy with higher HP is considered a boss. Most bosses have a distinct battle theme (with Smithy Gang leaders getting a special one) and a "fading away" or otherwise-distinct defeat animation. Additionally, the party's HP and FP are usually fully restored after defeating a boss.
It is possible to skip over the battle with Mack. When the player gets to the room where Mack is faced, instead of going straight to battle him, the player can jump on top of the Shysters on the left side, and carefully walk on them. If the Mack scene does not trigger when the player falls off them, the glitch has been performed correctly. The player must then walk to the Chancellor in the corner, and talk to him to finish the glitch. The "Star Pieces" option on the menu does not appear when this glitch is performed, as being victorious in the battle against Mack triggers the appearance of the menu.
The game is widely praised for its technical achievements, aesthetics, and the successful combination of a traditional RPG's turn-based combat with the platforming gameplay of the Super Mario series. Electronic Gaming Monthly's "Review Crew" gives the game a combined average score of 8.75/10.[9] All four members praise the visuals, though the game for being too childish in appearance is a point of contention. The sound design is also praised, with Andrew Baran stating that the sounds are faithfully from the Mario series and Mike Desmond commending the work done by the SNES's sound processor. Mark Lefebvre states that the game avoids being too technically overwhelming for the player as with other RPG games and notes that the game keeps its focus on the graphics and not in submenus during battles. Desmond adds that while the combat engine is similar to other RPGs, it is easy to use.
This is like a baby stellar nursery. These tall columns of gas and dust where stars are forming and you're listening to the interplay between the X-ray information and the optical information and it's really trying to give you a bit of the text.
The limited-time availability of the game--in both physical and digital formats, remember--is puzzling. The March 31st 2021 deadline to buy the game happens to coincide with the end of the financial year, and this approach will encourage anyone sitting on the fence to buy the game regardless, while also ensuring everyone pays full price for it - this one won't be part of any summer sales! Consumers are smarting from the economic events of 2020 and this Holiday season is going to be fiercely competitive between companies vying for your cash. With competition from a new generation of consoles, Nintendo wants to tie in as many people as possible for stocking fillers this year, and this limited-time tactic is one way to do that.
@BrintaPap its 3d ALL STARS not 3d most stars haha totally agree. Oh and making these remakes took next to zero effort on their part this is not covid related they just decided to exclude it for some reason
Either way, there's a lot of Mario in that package already. There's tens of hours to fully complete each of those games (even if someone has done it recently, moreso if they haven't since the games were new). There's lots of content here already. I'll be very happy with this pack.
Still buying but disappointed that Galaxy 2 hasn't been included. When personally I think its the best 3D Mario game to date. Hopefully it will come along eventually, luckily I still have both on the Wii.
This said it could be that the deadline is just that. A deadline. There's been a ton of previous "Anniversary/Celebration" collections that had very limited run like Zelda Master Quest collection or Metroid Prime Trilogy(until the WiiU eshop port, that is), so in that regard the deadline might be unique only in that this is the first celebration-collection title to be first released(rather than re-released like MP:Trilogy) in the era of an actual eshop capable of supporting full fiat titles(unlike the Wii's original Wiistore).
@Mmzom33 I expect the 35th anniversary stuff to be mostly all we've seen, but similarly I wouldn't be extremely surprised if a later full fiat Direct(let's be honest, at 15min in length what we got was just another mini-Direct) included it's own 35th Mario Anniversary segment with more announcements.
Of course, in the year(s) of COVID, I have no idea when next to expect a full fiat Direct. To be honest, I half wonder if COVID is partly why all Directs have been minis this year, making me wonder if there's some organizational issues that are hindering the production of Directs longer than the 15min minis we're getting.
Lots of the recent indide/3rd parties showcases/yesterday's 35th anniversary are the kind of stuff that could have been bundled as part of a single Direct in the past? On one hand, this make me ponder about future "full" Direct but on the other in recent months it -has- been a fair amount of these minis even if people still call for the "full" thing.
While I'd obviously hope for number seven, I think they're remaking it, or plan to release a "Galaxy collection" once the 3D all-stars are gone for good. Because the all-star collection needed more than 64 and Sunshine, and Galaxy 2 alone won't sell as well as a collection.
Sorry if somebody said this, but 2D allstars came out in two forms. The second time it came with Super Mario World. I doubt 3D Allstars would come out later with Mario Oddessy, but later with SMG2? It's possible.
I wouldn't be surprised if it was planned as a free DLC (or half priced) for members who own the 3D All-Stars collection and as a standalone Virtual Console purchase for everyone else who missed out on the 3D All-stars collection.
@Ludovsky I don't think the dysfunction is purely COVID19 related. Some of it, is no doubt related to the "-=NEW=- Switch" or whatever that's pending (which was delayed by COVID if the rumors are true), but I think a lot of it is due to what Sony and MS are doing. Nintendo says they don't compete, but they do. Nintendo's only 3.5 years into their console, normally their console's prime time. But they're caught mid-gen with both competitors ramping up the new gen this year. Nintendo probably expected to lay low, then come out swinging to counter the new consoles, but Sony and MS, without E3, deviated from normal routines and we're sitting 9 weeks from their launch or so without a date, price, preorders, or even full specs or games. So while those two play cat and mouse, Nintendo has to continue laying low if they really have a strategy to counter new console hype until there's actually new console hype to counter.
@Moonlessky While I don't know if it's the best game out of the bunch since I've never played either one, I too think its exclusion means it'll be full priced like mario world. I wanted all 3 to be in a bundle together but I see it's definitely not happening.
I honestly always liked the first Galaxy more anyway. Got all 121 stars with both Mario and Luigi, but something about Galaxy 2 just didn't keep my interested and I didn't come close to "100%ing" that one.
Galaxy 2 will be a paid DLC add-on for anyone who owns 3D All-stars. I definitely agree with the theory that these games will become eShop downloads after March 31st (including Galaxy 2), but it makes sense that sometime before that they will announce Galaxy 2 as a paid DLC.
It would be good if they make 3D mario allstars 2 ..With Mario Galaxy 2 & 3D mario World 3ds and Super mario bros 3ds all in one package.Be great if they did a zelda one as well with Ocarina of time, Majora's mask. And also all the Zelda gameboy advance games.
@Dezzy True, however the Wii U did a full Wii emulation, even with a home screen and everything. I would assume that the Switch would be capable as well. It depends on how differently the Switch operates compared to the Wii U, I guess.
If they do include it in April's eShop releases, hopefully the people who have purchased Super Mario 3D All Stars and therefore have a save file will get a discount on SMG2. Uncertain about that ro he fair.
I really hope Galaxy 2 does come to Switch at some point. I replayed it recently on Wii, and it's probably my favorite 3D Mario. The level design is just endlessly fun and replayable. I got the minimum amount of stars needed to beat the game so I could keep the majority of it fresh for if it does come to Switch.
